"None of those who have Hell before their eyes will fall into Hell. No one of those who despise Hell will escape Hell.... Nothing is so profitable as to converse concerning Hell. It renders our souls purer than any silver." ~St. John Chrysostom~ |

Quote of the Day Archives August
August 29, 2008 An elder has written that the amount of pride dwelling within us corresponds to the number of temptations we shall have. Elder Ephraim
August 22, 2008 Slaves of God! Know for certain that the troubles which befall you come not of themselves but by God's permission; so take all possible care to bear them with patience and perseverance, offering praise and thanksgiving for them to God. Know that he who resists troubles and tries to escape the hard way, is acting against his own salvation and is striving in his blindness to frustrate the order and plan of salvation appointed by God for all his servants. Bishop Ignatius Brianchaninov
August 15, 2008 A harlot does not persist in alliance with one man nor does a soul which is tied to many things abide in the love of spiritual teaching. St. Isaac of Syria
August 8, 2008 Listen to what the Lord says. The earth will tremble on account of those who, after so great and marvelous wonders, after my appearing in the world, after all that teaching which I have spread abroad in the world, still hesitate in unbelief and disobey my words. It will be rent in many pieces since it cannot carry on its back the senseless ones who in hardness of heart disobey me. Before their feet they will see their approaching fall and will tremble. When the earth quakes and the heaven is shaken and rolled up like a scroll with a great noise, their inflexible and implacable hearts will be frightened by those horrible terrors as that of a rabbit about to be killed. The light will become dark, the stars will fall, the sun and the moon will be extinguished over them; from the crevasses of the earth a fire will come up and overflow like the depths of the sea. Just as at the time of the deluge the windows of the heavens were opened and the water came down and gradually overwhelmed the nations, so the earth will be opened to its very foundations and will gush forth fire. Not just bit by bit, but all at once, covering all the earth, and all will become a river of fire. St. Symeon the New Theologian
August 1, 2008 It is very difficult to recognize pride in oneself. But here are some signs to tell you: if the enemy (devils) assail you, or wrong thoughts torment you, it means that humility is lacking in you, and so even if you do not realize the presence of pride in you - humble yourself. St. Silouan the Athonite
